The Germans lay their cards on the table

A hundred or so riders will be taking part in this 19th CCI**. After looking at the competition entries for all of the nations which closed on Tuesday, it is apparent that some of the very symbolic names in the world of eventing will be present. Whereas the German delegation is clearly displaying its ambitions, Compiègne is also delighted to welcome the legendary rider from New Zealand, Mark Todd.

Michael Jung is not intending to give up the first two steps of the podium in Compiègne. The talented German rider will be competing with three horses: La Biosthetique Sam FBW and Weidezaunprofi’s River of Joy (1st and 2nd in 2009) as well as Leopin which will be taking part in his 1st CCI**. Sam, with which he won the bronze medal at the last European Championships, has had an impressive career so far. He has competed in 24 international competitions, has won eight of them and has always been among the five best horses apart from twice. A mainstay of the German team, Frank Ostholt will also be taking part with his most experienced horses: Air Jordan 2, 4th individually and the gold medal winner in the team event at the World Equestrian Games in 2006, and Mr Medicott, with which he won the gold medal in the team event at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Their ambitions are clear: as experienced riders with their best horses, they are counting on taking possession of the best places… But they are not the only ones who are ambitious or experienced.

Several names have attracted our attention among the 13 nations represented, beginning with Mark Todd, the eventing legend, who was voted Rider of the 20th Century by the Fédération Équestre Internationale. The two-time Olympic Champion and the holder of many medals will be competing with Walk The Line (with which he won the CCI** of Houghton Hall in 2009) and Chuckleberry. Karin Donckers (BEL) is another competitor to watch out for. She has entered her two great horses, Gazelle de la Brasserie (the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2009 European Championships) and S.S. Jet which took part in Burghley and Badminton in particular. Among the other riders to follow there are Piggy French, the European Vice Champion, Lucy Wiegersma, 5th in the world ranking, with two horses which are beginners and Zara Phillips, the current World Champion. Tim Lips is just 24 years old and he has already taken part in the Olympic Games for the Netherlands. He will be competing with a young horse which has already taken part in the Lion World Championships for Young Eventing Horses and an experienced horse, Van Schijndel’s Concrex Owaola.

With regard to the “hopefuls”, as Compiègne brings together experienced riders and horses and well as up and coming ones, we would like to highlight the following new French new recruits: Manon Arguel, Margot Chabanne, Perrine Monmarson and from Picardy, Jennifer Vuillemin. Jennifer works at Eddy Sans’ “Écuries de Pontarmé” and has already experienced major competitions with 4 European Championships in the Junior and Young Rider category under her belt. She will be competing on the Grand Parc ground for the first time and will be riding Halcion, with which she recently won the Pro2 competition in Tartas (the county of Landes).

By entering these young riders in the CCI** of Compiègne, Laurent Bousquet, the national trainer, wants them to ‘gain experience” and to observe their reactions during an event for senior riders where there is serious competition. But there is also the qualification for the next European Championships (30 July to 1 August) at stake, which applies to all of the Young Riders, whether they are French or foreign ones, who are taking part in the competition in Picardy this weekend.
