D-6: A wonderful anniversary line-up

Several riders with European, World and Olympic titles will be among those competing at the 20th anniversary edition of the CCI** of Compiègne.  Unbeatable for more than three years, the German rider Michael Jung, who has just won the CICO*** of Fontainebleau, is the competition's favourite.

20 candles. The current World and European Champions will be taking part in the event.  A new trophy for 8-year-old horses. A cross-country course that has been modified so that habits won't set in. The new edition of the CCI** in Picardy is set to live up to its reputation.  On Thursday morning, at the beginning of the dressage test, the start list will feature about one hundred rider and horse pairs including 35 French ones.

The top ranking riders…

The Grand Parc Equestrian Stadium can pride itself on welcoming famous riders every year.  Michael Jung and La Biosthétique Sam FBW the winners of the CCI** in 2009, won the world title in October 2010! The best German rider currently will return to one of his favourite events with three horses, including Weidezaunprofi's River of Joy, with which he won the competition last year.  Competing alongside him will be some other accomplished riders, starting with another World Champion, Jean Teulère.  In particular he has entered Matelot du Grand Val with which he forms one of the nine rider and horse pairs included in Group 1 of the French Equestrian Federation (FFE).  The current European Champion, Great Britain’s Kristina Cook, will be present with a young eight year old horse, De Novo News.

Karin Donckers (Belgium) will once again attempt to put a spanner in the works for Michael Jung and the eventing "legend", New Zealand’s Mark Todd (two-time Olympic Champion) will also be competing..
Lastly, Nicolas Touzaint, Karim Florent Laghouag and Eddy Sans (the only rider from Picardy), all of whom are members of Group 1 of the FFE, should also be present for this 20th edition.

…And the hopefuls

The 8-year old horses, of which some were ranked during the World Championships for 7-year-old horses in 2010, will represent almost 15% of those competing. The competitors are all aware that Compiègne in an ideal ground for preparing major events.  In order to take part in their development, for the first time, Compiègne Équestre will be setting up a ranking specifically for them.

The hopeful women riders will also be taking part, with around twenty of them between 18 and 25 years of age.  Sweden and Switzerland will represent the youngest nations of the CCI**. Let us not forget that just behind the 3 best riders on the 2010 podium there were 4 riders who were all under 26 years of age!

Different testimonials:

Michael Jung – four-time winner in Compiègne and the current world champion

“Compiègne has held an important place for me at the beginning of the season for a long time.

As the competition is situated in a magnificent region in the heart of the forest, it boasts a ground that is favourable to creating cross country obstacles.  The wide variety of obstacles on the course, including the combinations in the water make it an interesting event to start off the season and test our young horses on a two star level competition.
I am sure that there will be many spectators and supporters this year once again, for what I hope will be a successful weekend.
Lastly, I like competing in Compiègne as the organisation is perfect and all of the people involved in the event are very friendly.”

Laurent Bousquet – the French National Selector

He has experienced the CCI of Compiègne as a rider, the national trainer of Japan, Belgium and France.
“Compiègne is a competition of great quality thanks to its facilities, its friendly welcome and its grounds, especially that of the cross country course. Its other advantage is its position on the calendar. This allows young horses to be seen not long after they competed in the Lion World Championships for 7-year-old horses at the end of the previous year.”

Jean Teulère – World Champion in 2002, Team Olympic Champion in 2004

“The selection criterion to choose a competition remains the technical quality of an event. In Compiègne, this has always been very satisfactory at all levels. All of the grounds are good, from the dressage arena to the cross country course to the show jumping ground.
When we used to take part in long-format events, it was also very pleasant to ride the steeplechase phase on the racecourse which was an ideal ground! And additionally, I have some real friends among the organising team who have managed to remain dedicated to the competition allowing it to continue over time.

Guy Otheguy – Honorary President of the competition, a course designer and an official international judge

“I think that I have carried out almost all the positions at the CCI. At the very beginning, the cross-country course went through the middle of the forest allowing riders to prepare for the French Championships and the selection for the Olympic Games in Australia. I was the course designer for the French Equestrian Federation at that time. Pre-built obstacles did not exist in those days and with Mr Delahaye, we were the chainsaw aces!
Monique Marini had great ambitions for Compiègne. Her determination to succeed allowed us to have access to the Beaux Monts grounds and to organise a CCI***, the European Young Riders’ Championship, which contributed to making the CCI renowned throughout Europe.  Thanks to the help of the town hall, its flower greenhouses and all of the team from the parks and gardens department, I have been able to create the courses which are the most decorated with flowers of the circuit. I remember that one morning I discovered that all the flowers were frozen, creating an unsightly display for the spectators… But this did not prove to be a problem, as in just a few hours, fresh plants had brightened up all of the flower beds! The team is always very available and efficient. Every year the organisers refuse entries as it is an event that is very suitable to start the season. Lastly, I won’t forget to mention what everyone speaks about on the European circuit: the event’s fabulous canteen in the marquee!”

Vincent de Brichambault – Chief Steward, in charge of applying the FEI rules

“It is always a magnificent competition. I remember that in 2008, in accordance with the rules, I had to cut a few whips which were too long including those of Zara Philipps and Pippa Funnel. At the prize giving ceremony, I came with two new whips which were the correct length. I offered one to Pippa, and as Zara Philips had not completed the show jumping test and was absent from the prize giving ceremony, I kept the other one for myself.”

THE REPUBLICAN GUARD, SPECIAL GUESTS!

Mass at 10.30 am conducted by His Grace, Monsignor de Mauny, accompanied by the brass band of the Republican Guard.

The Carrousel of the Lances- on Sunday after the Prize Giving Ceremony

Under the command of Captain Jacques Le Blay, the brass band of the cavalry comprising 40 officers and guard buglers will accompany the mass which will be held at 10.30 am opposite the main stand.

The Guard's buglers date back to the Municipal Guard in Paris, created in 1802. At that time, all of the mounted troops had brass bands which were more or less significant, in terms of their number of members. Its repertory includes military marches in particular, but also entertaining styles of music such as waltzes, polkas, gavottes, etc.
The buglers ride chestnut horses, which have been the tradition since 1885 and the timpanists ride grey ones.

The Carrousel of the Lances is the final reminder and symbol of what the French Cavalry used to be. Today it represents a level of equestrian instruction reached by young riders performing with horses which are 7-12 years old.  It will be accompanied by its own brass band.

Through its origins, the carrousel stems from jousts and tournaments before it became a refined show.

In the 18th century, military riding, at the instigation of the Duc de Choiseul, used it as an exercise to prepare for war. Loyal to tradition, the cavalry regiment of the Republican Guard will perform a carrousel display which represents part of the programme used in the past. Under the command of Lieutenant Patrick Poidevin, the guards will lead their horses with the left hand solely, as their right one will hold a lance and perform the required movements of traditional riding and varied figures in the three gaits.
